Antarctic Cooperation Agreement signed between Brazil and Argentina
On the occasion of the official visit to Buenos Aires of the President of the Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on Monday (23), the "Agreement on Antarctic Cooperation between the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Argentine Republic" was signed with the purpose of formalizing and stimulating the deepening of bilateral cooperation in Antarctic matters.
The agreement provides a legal framework for the governments of Brazil and Argentina to pursue joint activities and optimize the use of human and material resources, particularly in logistical operations and in interdisciplinary scientific research activities in Antarctica. Both countries are part of a group of 29 countries with Consultative Party status under the Antarctic Treaty, which regulates the activities of the international community in the continent.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains committed to strengthening the Antarctic Treaty System (STA) and collaborates, within the scope of its attributions, to the continued success of the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR).
