PRESS RELEASE N. 128
Advancement in the Migratory Policy of humanitarian shelter and family reunion in favor of Haitians and stateless people residing in Haiti - Joint Note from the MRE and MJSP
Through the Interministerial Ordinances MJSP/MRE nº 37, of March 30, 2023, and nº 38, of April 10, 2023, the Brazilian government renewed and advanced the humanitarian and family reunification policy in favor of Haitian nationals and stateless persons affected by major calamity, environmental disaster, or the situation of institutional instability in the Republic of Haiti.
The first Ordinance, aimed at granting visas for humanitarian reception, extends the validity period of the humanitarian reception visa from 180 to 365 days, the maximum allowed by law. The measure aims to provide more predictability and legal security to Haitians in vulnerable situations.
The subsequent Ordinance allows Haitian nationals and stateless persons already established in Brazil to apply for prior residence authorization for their family members who are still in Haiti. The procedure intends to expedite the granting of visas based on the right to family reunion.
The Brazilian government reaffirms its commitment to continue humanitarian policies in favor of Haiti.
