PRESS RELEASE N. 502
80 years of the United Nations
United Nations Day is celebrated on October 24. The day marks the anniversary of the entry into force, 80 years ago, of the UN Charter — the Organization’s founding document — whose preamble reaffirms, among other values, the fundamental rights of all people, the dignity and worth of the human person and the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small.
Brazil recognizes the Organization’s immeasurable contributions throughout its history in promoting peace, sustainable development, human rights and an international order based on international law.
Brazil upholds the values enshrined in the UN Charter and the importance of the multilateral dialogue upon which it is founded.
Brazil expresses its support for and pride in being a founding member of the Organization, butt also advocates for a broad reform of the UN and its bodies, with the goal of adapting them to current and future challenges, in a context marked by weakening multilateralism, escalating international conflicts and cuts in funding for its activities. Issues such as climate change, racial equality and peacebuilding are examples of topics that were not part of the Organization’s founding agenda but must now be reflected in its current norms and ongoing debates.
Brazil will continue to work with its traditional commitment and renewed confidence to strengthen the central role of the UN in maintaining international peace and security. It will also work to ensure that the Organization's actions have an increasingly positive impact on the well-being and living conditions of populations, particularly those in vulnerable situations.
The 21st century will be increasingly multipolar. For it to also be peaceful and fair, multipolarity must be accompanied by a renewed, strengthened, and legitimate multilateralism.
