45th Anniversary of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights

The Brazilian government celebrates the forty-fifth anniversary of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, marked on September 3rd. Established by the American Convention on Human Rights in 1969, the Court began its operations in 1979.

Since its inception, the Court has contributed to strengthening the Inter-American human rights system and promoting and protecting human rights in the States Parties to the American Convention, through the transformative impact of its rulings.

Brazil ratified the American Convention in 1992. In 1994, the country elected the first Brazilian judge to the Court, Professor Antonio Augusto Cançado Trindade. In 1998, Brazil recognized the compulsory jurisdiction of the Court. Since then, Brazil has hosted four regular sessions of the Court, the most recent in May 2024.

In 2021, Brazilian Judge Rodrigo Mudrovitsch was elected, currently serving as the Court's Vice President.

As it commemorates the 45th anniversary of this important regional body, the Brazilian government reaffirms its commitment to advancing human rights promotion and protection, and to strengthening its relationship with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
