PRESS RELEASE N. 2
40 years of the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR)
Today Brazil celebrates forty years of the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR). In 1982 and 1983, the first Brazilian Antarctic Operation (OPERANTAR I) was conducted, followed by the establishment, in 1984, of the Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station (EACF), which reopened in January 2020.
Brazil has established itself as an important actor in the maintenance of peace and security in and around Antarctica, as well as in scientific production and protection of the Antarctic environment. The 40th Brazilian Antarctic Operation (OPERANTAR 40th) is underway, in continuation to Brazil’s engagement on the continent.
Brazil is a member of a select group of 29 countries with consultative party status under the Antarctic Treaty, which regulates the activities of the international community on the continent.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains committed to strengthening the Antarctic Treaty System (STA) and cooperates, within the scope of its responsibilities, for the continued success of the Brazilian Antarctic Program. Within the context of the celebrations of the forty years of PROANTAR, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the support of the Alexandre de Gusmão Foundation (FUNAG), held the seminar “Brazil in Antarctica: a forty-year assessment”, in November 2021.
