PRESS RELEASE N. 358
20 years of the Brazil-Peru Strategic Alliance
Today, August 25, marks the 20th anniversary of the Brazil-Peru Strategic Alliance, which was established during President Lula’s visit to Lima in 2003. Over the past twenty years, bilateral relations have significantly improved, with progress in areas including trade and investment, border integration, health, environment, defense, and security.
Brazil has become Peru’s third largest trading partner and the main partner in South America, with bilateral trade surpassing $5 billion. Brazilian investment stock in Peru exceeds $1.2 billion, with Brazilian presence extending into key sectors including mining, manufacturies, services, construction, and energy. The two countries have executed critical physical integration projects, including the Inter-oceanic Highway, linking Peruvian ports with the Brazilian state of Acre. This intrastructure has fostered a closer relationship between economic and social actors on both sides of the border.
As Amazonian countries, Brazil and Peru are committed to promoting inclusive and sustainable development through a new common regional cooperation agenda that includes protection of the Amazon biome and its river basin, as well as the advancement of social development.
On this auspicious day for Brazil-Peru relations, the Brazilian government reaffirms its commitment to advancing the Strategic Alliance. It is Brazil's firm belief that the successful bilateral partnership with Peru will yield even greater benefits to our peoples.
