Rio Botanical Garden Launches “Ethnobotany with Open Doors” with a lecture on scientific evidence and fake news about medicinal plants
Following the lecture, participants will take a guided tour of the Thematic Collection of Medicinal Plants
The Extension Program in Ethnobotany and Medicinal Plants at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden will host the first edition of EPA – Ethnobotany with Open Doors next Monday, May 18. The event will take place starting at 1:30 p.m. in the institution’s Thematic Collection of Medicinal Plants. EPA will be held monthly.
The launch of the program is part of the activities celebrating National Medicinal Plant Day, observed on May 21, and will have the theme “Real or fake? Medicinal plants: between scientific evidence, unregulated products, and misinformation.” The lecture will be given by Professor Leopoldo Baratto, Ph.D., from the School of Pharmacy at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
A pharmacist with a degree from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Baratto holds a master’s and a doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Federal University of Paraná, with a postdoctoral fellowship in the History of Science at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences in Germany. Between 2017 and 2025, he served as president and vice president of the Brazilian Society of Pharmacognosy.
He works in the fields of Pharmacognosy, Historical Ethnobotany, History of Science, and evidence-based phytotherapy. He is an adjunct professor in the Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Science and Technology at UFRJ (CETECFAR/UFRJ). He is also active in science communication and is the founder of PlantaCiência - @plantaciencia / www.plantaciencia.com
Following the lecture, participants will take a guided tour of the Thematic Collection of Medicinal Plants, during which topics such as the properties and histories of the plants will be discussed.
Registration for the in-person event is free and can be completed via the online form. Space is limited to 50 participants.
The class will also be streamed live on the Google Meet platform.
