Plant reproduction strategies is the theme of Botânica Pop magazine No. 5, available online.
Issue No. 5 of Botânica Pop magazine, with the theme Plant Reproduction Strategies, is now available online. The magazine aims to disseminate botanical research in a clear and accessible way to students and anyone interested in the subject.
An article by João Paulo Basso Alves opens this issue by showing the variety of strategies developed by different groups of plants in their evolutionary process to reproduce. Among these strategies is interaction with insects and other animals. One of the most interesting is presented in Ricardo Eduardo Vicente's article on gardener ants! Yes, there are ants that plant gardens of epiphytes (plants that live on other plants but are not parasites).
Epiphytes are also the subject of Gabriel Silva's article, which shares more knowledge about these plants that like to settle on tree trunks or branches, such as orchids and bromeliads. Researcher Jakeline Pires had to overcome her fear of heights and learn to climb in order to complete her master's thesis at ENBT. She tells her story in the section “You have a message!”.
This edition of the magazine features artwork by Daniel Pereira Monteiro, who illustrated Aristolochia fimbriata (papo-de-peru), a species that has a very sophisticated reproduction strategy. Daniel's work was chosen in Notice 01/2025 JBRJ/MMA for the Selection of Illustrations for the cover of Revista Botânica Pop No. 5. Davi Nepomuceno da Silva Machado, Diego Ferreira da Silva, Gabriella da Silva Saab, Maria Silvia de Carvalho Neta, and Sabrina Vasconcelos Caram also contributed to this issue.
The production of this issue was coordinated by Vidal de Freitas Mansano, Liana Carneiro Capucho, and Cristiam Marins Marques Campos. Botânica Pop magazine is published by the Graduate Program in Botany at the National School of Tropical Botany - Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute (PPG-Bot/ENBT/JBRJ).
