Pixinguinha in new arrangements: Wake up! Music Collective presents classics by the composer on Sunday in the Garden
Classics such as “Carinhoso,” “Lamento,” and “Rosa” are in the repertoire.
Pixinguinha's compositions are given new life in arrangements specially crafted for a classical chamber ensemble, consisting of flute, viola, cello, and double bass. The interpretation is by Acorda! Coletivo de Música, formed by Alexandre Brasil (double bass), Alexandre Fenerich (flute), Maria Clara Valle (cello), and Bernardo Fantini (viola). The group is dedicated to sound experimentation in the city of Rio de Janeiro and to a diverse repertoire. In the Domingo no Jardim program on the 14th, Acorda! will present classics such as “Carinhoso,” “Lamento,” “Rosa,” and “Ainda me recordo,” among other works from Pixinguinha's repertoire.
The collective stands out for offering the public both the opportunity to listen to renowned works and to discover unpublished pieces from the national and international chamber music repertoire. The group's work values the multiple musical languages of contemporary and Latin American composers, moving between classical and popular music, as well as including original compositions by its members.
Since its debut in 2022 with a concert in the Clássicos Domingos series at the Arthur da Távola Carioca Music Reference Center, Acorda! has been expanding its activities. It was selected in the Rio Art Museum (MAR) musical occupation contest and, over the next two years, performed at important cultural venues in Rio de Janeiro, such as the Municipal Theater (Música no Assyrio), Dulcina Theater, Espaço Sérgio Porto, and the Federal Justice Cultural Center. At the latter, the group also promoted educational workshops in addition to concerts.
The members of Acorda! have solid training and extensive experience in the music scene. Alexandre Brasil, a bassist with vast experience, is a member of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra and the choro group Rabo de Lagartixa. Alexandre Fenerich, who holds a PhD in Musicology from USP, is a composer, flutist, and adjunct professor at the Villa-Lobos Institute in Rio de Janeiro.
Violinist Bernardo Fantini holds a master's degree in music from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He has participated in and produced numerous classical and Brazilian popular music performances featuring musicians such as Guinga, Wagner Tiso, Leila Pinheiro, Elba Ramalho, Leni Andrade, and Nelson Sargento, among others. He also participated in singer Marisa Monte's band on her latest tour, Verdade uma ilusão. Maria Clara Valle, cellist, composer, arranger, and music educator, is a member of the string group cAis, with which she develops improvisation and creation work with female string instrument players.
The performance will take place at 11 a.m. in front of the bust of Dom João and is free of charge. Visitors only pay the entrance fee to the arboretum. In case of rain, it will be moved to the Galpão das Artes.
