Palmeiras Trail featured in Rio's Botanical Garden
A symbol of Rio's Botanical Garden, the imperial palm tree is on the itinerary.
Palm trees are the highlight of Friday Trails in August at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. On the guided tour, visitors can enjoy and learn about 21 species of the Arecaceae family (the scientific name for the botanical family of palm trees).
Coconut trees, oil palms, juçara palms, açaí palms, among others, are some examples belonging to the palm tree group. The imperial palm (Roystonea oleracea), which can reach 41 meters in height, is the symbol of the Rio Botanical Garden and is also part of the group. Its first specimen, which was named palma mater, was planted in 1809 in the arboretum. Currently, there are more than 1,700 palm trees on the site.
The Palm Tree Trail will be offered on August 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29. Departures are at 10 a.m. from the Visitor Center. No prior reservation is necessary; just show up and participate. The guided tour is free. There is only an admission fee for the arboretum.
