Climatologist Carlos Nobre is the guest at the 12th edition of the Biodiversity Forum
In celebration of World Day to Combat Desertification (June 17), the Botanical Garden Museum is holding a special edition of the Biodiversity Forum with climatologist Carlos Nobre, one of the most respected climate scientists in Brazil and the world. With the theme “Climate Emergency and the Amazon, Cerrado and Caatinga”, this month's meeting will be held entirely online, with a live broadcast on the Botanical Garden's YouTube channel, on June 17 at 14:30.
The guest will address the consequences of climate change for Brazil's three main inland biomes and the fundamental role of science, the bioeconomy and traditional knowledge in mitigating the impacts and promoting a sustainable future. The lecture will also discuss risks such as the savannization of the Amazon and the growing effects of desertification in the Cerrado and Caatinga, warning of the urgency of coordinated actions on a global and regional scale.
Carlos Nobre is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, TWAS, the US Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society - the first Brazilian to be appointed Planetary Guardian. He has participated in several IPCC reports, including the Fourth Report, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (2007). A professor at USP's Institute of Advanced Studies, he is co-chairman of the Scientific Panel for the Amazon (SPA) and creator of the Amazonia 4.0 project, which proposes a sustainable bioeconomy based on science, technology and traditional knowledge.
Held monthly, the Biodiversity Forum is coordinated by a board of experts from the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute (JBRJ) and promotes debate on biodiversity conservation and key environmental issues. The activity is aimed at specialists, researchers, students and other interested parties and offers a certificate of participation to the public.
