The G20 Brasil is broadening the basis for social participation so that more voices are heard and considered in the search for solutions to global challenges. From this Tuesday on (20), people, civil society organizations, international institutions, and governments worldwide can send suggestions for the discussion of the forum's leaders through the G20 Participatory Social platform.

The bilingual website (English-Portuguese) will receive documents with proposals for priority themes until September 9th. Thus, one of the unprecedented initiatives in the forum, to create a mechanism for people to bring questions about their realities to world leaders, will be possible. In addition, people and organizations will be able to register self-managed events and activities related to the forum's priorities, marking the beginning of the articulation process for the G20 Social Summit, which will take place from November 14th to 16th in Rio de Janeiro.

Through the Platform, any citizen in Brasil or anywhere else in the world can not only interact with the documents that civil society will deliver to leaders but also upload new contributions and recommendations on the three priorities of the Brazilian presence. 'The goal is that by September 9th, we will add the proposals of civil society organizations and the proposals for activities for the Social Summit,' said Renato Simões, Secretary of Social Participation of the Presidency of the Republic, during the Platform's launch. 'Citizens from all over the world, with personal documents, can participate,' he said.

Plural voices and demands

Expanding social participation in the debates of the world's largest economies has been a success since the beginning of the Brazilian term of office. In July, representatives of the engagement groups, which have been part of the forum since 2010, participated in unprecedented sessions with the Sherpas, finance ministers, and central bank presidents of the member countries, reaffirming the urgencies from the civil society perspective.

'It is important because it amplifies civil society's participation in building the G20 Social proposals. We understand that this is an essential tool, and we are already trying and thriving in the participatory planning of the federal government of Brasil, emphasized the Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, Márcio Macêdo. 'We expect that the platform will boost the participation of organized civil society and the people in general in the construction of the G20 Social proposals.'

The action recognizes the importance of social technologies in promoting economic policies that address inequalities, hunger, poverty, ecological transition, and sustainable development. The launch of the Participatory Social G20 is the forum's opportunity to receive more input, particularly from global social movements.

G20 Social Summit

Days before the G20 Leaders' Summit, the Brazilian presidency will hold, from November 14th to 16th, a meeting of civil society organizations and social movements to discuss topics such as inequality, social inclusion, combating hunger and poverty, sustainable development, promoting a more comprehensive and inclusive dialogue that can result in concrete commitments to address global challenges.

The event will have thematic meetings, followed by a plenary session to approve the communiqué that must be presented to the presidents of the forum's member countries and delivered to South Africa, which will assume the group's presidency in December this year. During the three days, there will also be self-managed activities promoted by social movements and national, public, and private international institutions, as well as events, fairs, shows, and other cultural activities.

'We are calling self-managed activities 'voices,' where social movements from around the world, present at the Social Summit, can organize their debates, hold their discussions, debating the priorities of the Brazilian presidency of the G20, which are the fight against hunger, poverty, and inequality, the fight against climate change and the reform of global governance,' concluded the Minister.
