Countries that have chaired the G20: learn more about the previous summits
The first G20 summit of heads of State and government was held in 2008 in Washington D.C., United States, and since then, meetings of the world's biggest economies have taken place on five continents of the Planet, always accompanying the rotating presidencies of member countries

Buenos Aires, Bali, Hangzhou, Pittsburgh and Riyadh. What do these cities have in common? They all have hosted the G20 Summit, the moment when heads of State and Government approve the agreements negotiated throughout the year and point out ways to deal with global challenges.
The summit represents the conclusion of the work carried out by the country that holds the rotating presidency of the group. The first one at the level of heads of State and Government was held in 2008 in Washington D.C., United States, at the height of the crisis caused by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers. Before that, the G20 was a forum of Finance ministers, created in 1999 after a series of international economic crises.
Since the first summit of heads of State and government in 2008, 17 other cities around the world have hosted the meeting. In 2009 and 2010, right at the start of the G20's work, there were two summits a year, in different countries. Since 2011, an annual summit has been held in Cannes, France, at the end of the work of each rotating presidency, in an emblematic city of the country presiding over the group.
The last summit was held in New Delhi, India, the country that passed the presidency to Brazil. Both India and Brazil, alongside South Africa, currently form the G20 troika (a trio of members consisting of the last, current, and next presidents). The country holding the presidency coordinates the group with the support of the other two. The entire content of the last summit can be accessed on the website maintained by the Indian presidency.
Under the Brazilian presidency, the host city for the final G20 Summit will be Rio de Janeiro, on November 18 and 19, 2024. For a history of previous summits, the cities where they took place, the main conclusions, logos and photos of the heads of State, access Previous Summits.
