Confirmed voices: 164 self-managed activities are selected for the G20 Social Summit
The respect for the autonomy of social movements and other groups from Brazilian and international civil society was a request made by President Lula himself when proposing the G20 Social and its Summit, and now the announcement of the selected activities indicates the direction of the debates that will take place at the major event on November 14th, 15th, and 16th in Rio de Janeiro, preceding the Leaders' Summit.

“We have President Lula's clarity and determination that we want a respectable relationship with the movements; there is no interest in tutoring or monitoring any debate but in providing conditions for this debate to happen freely and sovereignly, making it the greatest legacy of the G20. We can write an important chapter of history with the G20 Social,” said the Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic (SGPR), who coordinates the G20 Social in July, at the launch of the G20 Social Summit.
So, with the idea of autonomous popular participation as a guide, now, one month before the Summit that will energize Rio de Janeiro and the world, the announcement of the selection of self-managed activities that will make up the event's program sets the tone for the excitement expected to draw thousands of people to the capital on November 14th, 15th, and 16th. SGPR received 852 activity proposals; 479 qualified for the second evaluation phase, and 164 were selected.
The program will be shaped by topics such as environmental justice, health equity, fighting racism and colonialism, LGBTQIAPN+ rights, pay equality, preservation of cultural hubs, and the defense of public services. It will also highlight the colors and faces of social struggles in Brazil and around the world, as activities submitted by organizations from other countries are also among those selected.
If new spaces become available, a second call will be made, and the General Secretariat will contact the proponents of the remaining activities, following the selection criteria.
In addition to the self-managed activities, there was also the opportunity to register fair proposals on three axes: Food products and services; Books, publications, and promotions; and Handicrafts and services. The selected fairs will also soon be announced by SGPR and by G20 Brasil.
