Eight Brazilian towns have been included in the TOP 100 Good Practice Stories 2023 list, which recognizes actions that favor sustainable tourism around the world. Santa Catarina municipalities Urubici, Bom Jardim da Serra, Bombinhas and Navegantes are now part of the Dutch organization Green Destinations’ ranking. In Rio Grande do Norte, highlights are beach destinations Tibau do Sul, São Miguel do Gostoso and Apodi.

“Tourism is a transformative agent towards growth, inclusion and equity, but solid partnerships must be established between governments, companies, civil society organizations and local communities,” said the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism Executive Secretary Ana Carla Lopes. The Ministry coordinates the activities of the G20 Tourism Working Group, and has presented measures to promote sectoral sustainable development through international cooperation and dialogue with multilateral institutions.

According to Ministry of Tourism data, ecotourism is the second biggest reason why foreigners visit Brazil (16.3%), after the sun and beaches (71.7%). The Brazilian experience is the basis for priorities that will be discussed at the G20 Sherpa Track’s Tourism and Sustainable Development WG.

The work will be integrated into the Finance Track for guidance on financing tourism by multilateral banks, and to leverage the sector as an agent of social and economic development.
