ESD and IPRI/FUNAG Promote Geopolitics and Defense Course
On October 6, 2025, the opening ceremony of the Geopolitics and Defense Course (CGEOD 2025) was held. The course is a partnership between FUNAG and the Superior School of Defense. The event was attended by the Commander and Rector of the ESD, Major-Brigadier (Medical Corps) Carla Lyrio Martins; Ambassador George Torquato Firmeza, liaison diplomat from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the School; and Dr. Annita Valléria Calmon Mendes, General Coordinator of Research at FUNAG’s Institute for International Relations Research (IPRI).
The ceremony marked the launch of the second e-book, “Geopolitics and Defense: territories, technologies and sovereignty,” which includes essays written by the 2024 class. Organized by the course team in partnership with FUNAG, the publication addresses topics such as demographic change in Brazil, the geopolitics of outer space, the Zone of Peace and Cooperation of the South Atlantic, Amazon management, and Brazilian digital sovereignty.
As part of the CGEOD 2025 activities, on October 15, the IPRI/FUNAG welcomed the class at the Ambassador Paulo Nogueira Batista Auditorium (Annex II of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) for a lecture on Brazilian geopolitical thought, given by Professor Oscar Medeiros Filho. In addition to learning about FUNAG’s activities and facilities, the students also took a guided tour of the Ambassador Antonio Francisco Azeredo da Silveira Library of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the largest collection in Brazil in the field of international relations, with about 170,000 volumes.
